Lighthouse Mission - Street Connect
Who are we serving?
Homeless men, women, and children who come from all walks of life and each have their own story. Some have experienced abuse, addiction, crisis, mental illness, divorce, or bankruptcy that led to their current situation.
Who is helping connect us to their needs?
The Lighthouse Mission offers a hand up, not just a handout, to end the cycle of homelessness and restore people through Christ. They do everything in their power to address the underlying causes that lead to homelessness for guests. On average, they shelter 250 people each night in 8 different kinds of shelters. They also provide three meals a day, weekly case management, classes, referrals to community resources, as well as discipleship from a holistic perspective.
Lighthouse Mission’s newest program, Street Connect (SC), is designed to reach out to people who are chronically homeless by creating deeper relationships with our neighbors in camps and on street corners, with the loving intention of inviting them into our Drop-In Center and toward total life recovery.
With a maximum of two vans, the SC Coordinator will lead teams of 6-12 volunteers all around the greater Bellingham area four evenings and nights a week. The team will meet and converse with people who are homeless in order to develop a trusting relationship that will help us understand their needs and discover opportunities for higher levels of care.
How are we serving?
There are two ways your group can serve:
· 5-6 volunteers can join the Street Connect Coordinator as they drive all around the greater Bellingham area on an evening from 6-9pm. The first half hour will be a brief orientation and then the team will set out to meet people, hand out sandwiches, and other needed items. There are opportunities to pray with people and invite them into greater connection and support with the Mission.
Groups can also stock the Street Connect van by providing the items listed for hygiene kits at the bottom of this web page (https://www.thelighthousemission.org/how-to-help/item-donation/)
Who do you contact?
If part of your group wants to go out in the van, click here (https://www.thelighthousemission.org/how-to-help/volunteer/) and select Submit a Group Volunteer Request. You’ll need to specify that you’d like to do Street Connect and provide a couple dates that work for your group. Please give them at least a couple weeks’ advance notice.
If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call the Mission at 733-5120 and ask for the Volunteer Coordinator or press 6. She will help you become part of this meaningful and effective outreach ministry.
If you need help in the process, Wendy at CTK is available (firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-733-1337 ext 212) Please share your project with us by using the hashtag #CTKserves on social media!
At CTK, we value authenticity, simplicity, empowerment, relationship, and caring about the community we live in. One key way we serve is by empowering small groups to make a difference through our local partners who address important issues for those in the hardest life circumstances. The opportunity above is a chance to tangibly demonstrate God's care, compassion, and love for those around us. As your church, we hope this makes it easy for you to put the Great Commandment to love your neighbor as yourself into action
